Canadian Regional Snow Cover Trends, 1955/56 to 2002/03

The following tables summarize snow cover trends computed for various regions of Canada. The regional snow cover series were generated from in situ daily snow depth observations at stations with at least 38 years data in the period since 1955. Statistically significant trends are shown in bold. The trends are updated on an annual basis. Definitions of the variables and regions are provided below the tables. Please note that the stations used in derive these results are mainly located in valleys and at lower elevations.

Definition of Annual Snow Cover Statistics:

No. Stations: number of stations included in regional average
First Date of Continuous Snow Cover: the first date when there were 14 consecutive days with daily snow depth greater-than-or-equal to 4 cm.
Last Date of Continuous Snow Cover: the first date when there were 14 consecutive days with daily snow depth less than 4 cm.
SCD1: The number of days in the first half of the snow cover year (Aug-Jan) with daily snow depth greater-than-or-equal to 2 cm.
SCD2: The number of days in the second half of the snow cover year (Feb-Jul) with daily snow depth greater-than-or-equal to 2 cm.
SCD Total: The total number of days in the snow cover year with daily snow depth greater-than-or-equal to 2 cm.
Max. Snow Depth: Maximum daily snow depth during period of continuous snow cover.
Date of Max. Depth: Date corresponding to maximum reported daily snow depth for snow season.
Mean Snow Depth: Mean daily snow depth during period of continuous snow cover.
Stdev of Snow Depth: Standard deviation of daily snow depths during period of continuous snow cover.
Median Snow Depth: Median daily snow depth during period of continuous snow cover.
