The Walrus: Tusks Go back one page |
| |
"The walrus uses its tusks for lots of things. In showing social dominance, it may choose to fight other walruses using its tusks as a weapon. You'd think that getting hit with these large ivory things would hurt, but all walruses are equipped with a layer of wrinkled skin that act like armour to reduce damage. Still, a walrus with giant tusks sure can be intimidating! It also uses its tusks to anchor and pull itself on land, and creating breathing holes in the ice for when they gather food underwater." |
