Snowflakes: Are They All Different? Go back one page |

"Well, I hate to burst your bubble, but that simply isn't true. Remember that snowflakes are made up of many tiny ice crystals. Well, small changes in the environment will greatly alter a crystal's shape, and this changes a snowflake as well. For example, the air temperature affects its structure as it forms in a cloud, and a slight change in wind speed or direction will alter the crystal's shape as it falls from the sky. But if you can find two snowflakes that went through the exact same environments, they'll be totally identical! Better not try though, because the chance of this happening is extremely rare." |
