First Wildlife Encounter: The Lemming Go back one page |
Mr. Okpik nods and motions for you to follow him. You step outside in the snow and hear a scurrying noise near your feet. A small white-furred rodent pops up underneath the ground to greet you. You adore its short bushy tail and how it looks just like a hamster! Before long, it turns away and burrows back into the snow. |

"Our first wildlife! That white rodent you just saw was a lemming, and it's the smallest mammal you'll see here. They manage to survive during the cold winter by eating plants, grasses, lichens, berries, and seeds, and by using the snow as shelter. Hiding in the snow protects them not only from the cold weather, but also from dangerous predators like the Arctic fox, the snowy owl, and the ermine. Indeed, many Arctic animals rely on lemmings as a source of food. Research has indicated a relationship between the population of lemmings and Arctic predators. So without lemmings, other animals would surely be in trouble!" |
