About Iqaluit Go back one page |

|
You follow Mr. Okpik outside where he takes you around on his snow mobile to see the range of services that the capital of Nunavut has to offer. Just like any other Canadian town, there are hospitals, houses, schools, and shops. But you don't see any igloos anywhere! Your sightseeing is briefly interrupted as you hear a jet plane fly overhead. |

"Ah, yes. That plane has been getting a lot of use lately. Iqaluit is located on the coast of Baffin Island, so people from other parts of Canada can only get here by plane or boat. We are constantly improving our city with new services and technologies to make Iqaluit grow, but if you look around you will also see that we have kept much of our traditional culture alive, making our city truly unique. We are lucky to be one of the few communities in the Arctic with a road system, so cars and taxis are available. However, most of the people get around either by snowmobiles or all-terrain vehicles." |
