Avalanches: What To Do If You're Caught                                  Go back one page

"It's a horrifying experience, but if you're ever caught in an avalanche, don't lose hope. Before it stops, escape the avalanche by moving to the side where the snow moves slower, or try grabbing on to something strong like a tree or a rock. If you can't do that, just do your best to stay on your feet or swim with the avalanche and get closer to the snow's surface. If you're going to be buried when the avalanche stops, your friends are your only hope for survival, and you can cup your hands in front of your mouth to allow enough air to breathe for 30 minutes. Over 90% of victims found within 15 minutes survive."
